The Pennsic Choir

Welcome to the Known World Choir at Pennsic, also known as the Pennsic Choir!

At Pennsic 37, the Choir will be directed by Erlandr Nordenskald of the East Kingdom. This will be Erlan’s 10th year serving as KWC Co-ordinator and her 7th concert as director.

What is the Known World Choir / Pennsic Choir?

The Known World Choir is a group of people from across the Kingdoms of the SCA who love to sing period vocal music and learn about period performance practice. Most of our music is European, from the 14th - 16th centuries. The Known World Choir now has choirs in other parts of the SCA – Estrella War, Lillies War and Gulf Wars – and plans are in the works for a KWC in Lochac.

To stay informed about the activities of the Known World Choir, and to access the music for the Pennsic Choir, join our Yahoo Group at groups.yahoo.com/group/KWChoir. (You must have or sign up for a free Yahoo ID to join this online email list.)

Singing in the Pennsic Choir is an intense and rewarding experience. We rehearse 2 hours each day for 7 days. The concert is held on the Thursday of War week.

How to join the Pennsic 37 Choir

To sing in the Pennsic Choir, you don’t need to be a musician, but do need to be familiar with choral singing. The choir is first a learning experience, and then a performing experience. You need to be able to match pitch and follow the flow of music. (When music goes up, you go up, when music goes down, you go down!) It is also important to have a sense of rhythm and be able to keep simple time. Counting up to 4 should definitely be a priority.

While you don’t have to be able to read music or sight-sing, it does help. Everyone is welcome to join in the choir, however, learning the music before war would be very helpful. To facilitate this, the music for Pennsic 37 will be available for download from the Known World Choir Yahoo Group webpage or by postal mail from the director. It also helps if you are present for as many of the rehearsals as possible.

Registration

If you would like to sing with the Pennsic Choir, please use the on-line form to register. It will help the director plan, making for a better concert!

Pre-registration ends on July 20. After that, you may see the director at a rehearsal or inquire at A&S point during the War.

(If you have any problems using the on-line form, please mail the following info to the director:)

Music

This year's music will be available soon in PDF and MIDI format from the KWC Yahoo Group website, or can be requested by e-mailing the director.

Currently, the program is hanging between 2 choices:

Christmas in August or
the music of Salmone Rossi

The decision will be made soon.
