Rapier Combat

Greetings from Don Antonio Patriquin,

Below you will find the Pennsic standard rapier conventions. As in years past, these rules will govern all war point events, and other rapier activities where the marshal-in-charge so chooses. Rules applicable to particular activities are denoted in the individual event descriptions. Fencers are encouraged to review these conventions carefully, as there have been changes from last year.

In service,

Authorizations

In order to participate in any rapier war point events, a fencer must have authorized in at least one rapier weapons form prior to arrival at War.

Fencers are free to authorize in additional weapons forms at War, and use those forms in war point events. Participation in non-war point events will be at the discretion of the Marshal in Charge of a particular event.

Inspections

Per the Corporate Rules for Rapier Combat (the "Society Rules") in the SCA, all fencers, prior to every combat or practice, shall ensure their equipment is safe, in good working order and has been inspected by a marshal authorized to inspect rapier gear.

At Pennsic, such inspection must be performed (a minimum of once per day) by either a marshal from a fencer’s home kingdom to that kingdom’s standards or, if a marshal from that kingdom is not available, by any marshal, to the Society Rules.

Cut and Thrust

Fencers interested in practicing cut and thrust rapier are free to do so on the rapier field, using the Society Rules or their own Kingdom’s cut and thrust programs. Fencers wishing to practice C&T must be supervised by a marshal warranted to do so in that marshal’s Kingdom.

Youth Rapier

This year’s Marshal in Charge of Youth Rapier combat is Lord John Macpherson.

Minors wishing to participate in youth fencing activities must first see Lord John (accompanied by a parent or guardian) to complete necessary paperwork. Lord John may be found on the field during youth fencing practice, at times listed on the schedule below. Youth combatants have a regular time for organized practices. However, they may also practice according to their kingdom’s rules and marshallate supervision standards at other times.
