Disability Services

Gentles with disabilities are welcome to participate at Pennsic War!

At Pennsic, Disability Services is located in the Info Point tent, across from the Cooper's camp store. Daily Office Hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Disability Services will attempt to fill your requests for basic accommodations and services. We can better do so if you contact us in advance, so please use our Registration form to alert us to your needs before Pennsic begins.

Services include:

  • camping space
  • handicapped parking
  • electrical recharge for scooters and medical devices
  • transportation by golf cart (provided by The Watch)
  • requests for accessible porta-john placement
  • assistance with service animals
  • and coordination of requests for sign language interpreters.

Please note that Pennsic is a primitive camping event and access to modern facilities is limited. For example, power outages can occur at Pennsic, so a constant supply of electricity cannot be guaranteed.

Please watch this page for updates and information. We look forward to seeing you at War!

Yours in service,
Saidhah Roxana al Busura (Lady Bast) - e-mail
Department Head, Disability Services

On-line registration ended July 16th. If you have Disability Services requests, please come see us on-site, in Town Hall

Registering for the Disabilities Camping Area

Camping in the Disabilities Camping Area is limited to individuals with a disability and those persons camping in the same tent. RV's are not permitted in the Disabilities Camping Area. Electrical outlets are nearby for recharging of medical devices and scooters. (See the Electric Recharging section for more specific information.)

When we assign space in the camping area, we first place those who have pre-registered with both Disability Services and Cooper's Lake Campground. After that it is first-come, first-served – so please pre-register to make our job and your vacation run smoother!

Other Services

Sign Language Interpeters

In past years, most individuals requesting interpreters have made their own arrangements, and interpreters contacted Disability Services to let us know when they were interpreting specific Courts and classes. To our knowledge, no additional requests for interpreters were made by hearing impaired/deaf gentles. If this arrangement is working fine, we have no wish to change it. However, we would like to hear from the individuals involved to determine if the services provided were sufficient.

We encourage interpreters who wish to volunteer their services to contact Disability Services with their availability (e-mail before July 16th, or see us on-site). On-site contact information should include: Name, Block Number, Nearest Intersection, and Group Name.

Gentles who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired and wish to request interpreting services are also invited to contact Disability Services, providing the above information. If possible, requests and arrangement for services will be matched prior to Pennsic.

Transportation

Specialized Transport will no longer be handled directly through Disability Services. It is now a function of the Watch (formerly known as Public Safety). Most Watch golf carts will now be equipped to handle 1-2 passengers in addition to 2 staff members.

Instead of pre-arranged pick-ups, anyone in need of Specialized Transport need only flag down a watch cart to get a ride. Watch carts will be diligently checking at bus stops for those in need of transport, but will also be available for flagging down at any point. The Watch has a greater cart structure this year, so patrols will be more widespread and more frequent in their passes of various areas.

Any further questions about the service should be addressed to the Watch.

Students & teachers: please note that there is a bus stop one block from the A&S tents, at Chandler's Way and Dragon Trace.

To request the services listed below, please visit us
in the Info Point/Town Hall tent located across from the Cooper's Store. We will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Handicapped Porta-john Placement

Handicapped-accessible facilities are located in various locations around Pennsic. At Pennsic, Disability Services can tell you the location of the nearest handicapped-accessible porta-john to your campsite, class, battle, merchant, performing arts activity or party.

If you would like to request a location for a handicapped-accessible porta-john, please contact Disability Services prior to the start of war. Requests must be made every year, as all handicapped-accessible port-johns are assigned new locations based on requests. Please do not assume that since one was in one place last year, that it will be there again this year.

Electric Recharging / Scooters

Information on local Scooter Rental companies is available by contacting Disability Services.

A recharging area for scooters and medically necessary devices is available. Pre-registering your medical device or scooter will help us with advance planning. In order to ensure that sufficient charge time is available for all who need it, after arrival on site, an individual must obtain an official recharging tag from Disability Services and schedule a time and specific outlet for use.

Handicapped Parking

Handicapped parking is available in designated areas. In order to ensure that sufficient space is allocated, we ask all individuals using handicapped parking to please check in with Disability Services.

Service Animals

Pets are not allowed at Pennsic. Fully trained ADA qualifying service animals are permitted.

All service animals must be checked-in at Troll by the Service Animal Liason. The information requested at check-in is designed to help us make the Pennsic experience as smooth and safe as possible for you and your animal and is completely voluntary. Please be aware that, while Troll is staffed 24 hours a day, this is a service provided by a staff of many. The Service Animal Liason is only one person, thus your courtesy in making every attempt to arrive and check in your service animal between the hours of 9am and midnight is greatly appreciated.

For policies regarding other service animals, please contact Disability Services

At Pennsic, owners are responsible for picking up and properly disposing of their animal's waste. Owners are responsible for their animal's behavior. Any owner that does not keep their service animal under strict control and supervision may be required to remove them from site.

Please note that in no way are gentles with Service Animals required to camp with Disability Camping.
