An unbelted tournament for documentable kits that meet the standards of the Fedoratii of the Duchy Von Drachenklaue Order of the Cataphract: Participants must: appear (from a spear throws distance) as if they walked from the pages of a history book. Their appearance in Armour should inspire others to excellence and must have no glaringly un-documentable aspects (beyond those required for safety - ie: baskethilts, bargrills, cops, gauntlets, etc). Rule of thumb: if you can document it you can have it -- to include kits based on period works of art.

The Tournament Winner (martial prowess) will receive the title "Fedoratii Primus Pilus". A second winner will be chosen from amongst the participants as "best kit in show" and receive the title "Fedoratii Signifer". Both will be inducted into the VDK "Order of the Fedoratii", adorned with badge, and receive material prizes.

Entrants: unbelted fighters. The theme this year is "Spears of all kinds". A short dagger (18") is allowed as a sidearm. A Roman melee will open the tournament, followed by singles fighting

Siege Engine Inspections
Siege Engines must be inspected before they can be used in battle. The inspection requires that the siege engine be shot several times.

Missile Day - Naval Battle
Open to CAs, Siege and Fighters alike.
Both archers and melee fighters use simulated ships in a mock naval battle attempting to capture 5 islands in this unlimited-rez battle. Each ship must be pre-constructed in accordance with accompanying rules (or better) which can be found by contacting Lord Tobyn at DragonsHeorth@aol.com or picked up at Inspection Point. Anyone planning on participating should be familiar with the rules (and anyone planning on "floating a vessel" likely needs these rules BEFORE Pennsic).

Some highlighted rules:
  • All archers must fit inside ship for ship to move.
  • Ships are moved by archers carrying ("rowing") the PVC sides starting in "port" area.
  • Due to the fragile PVC nature of the ships, no hand-to-hand combat may take place BETWEEN boats.
  • NO RAMMING – Ramming ships are considered immediately destroyed.
  • Ships must drop participants just off of an island to which they MUST kneel ("wade") to shore.
  • Hand to hand may occur ON an island or between waders and an island based opponent.
  • Any archer stepping outside the boat "at sea" is considered swept away and may only be pulled (literally) into an anchored boat or "swim" (belly or back stroke) to an island or "rock" (kneeling on haybale).
  • Participants on islands must maintain contact with a haybale or be immediately "swept away".
  • Wounded participants may row; killed participants may not.
  • Capturing an Island requires the lifting of a teams flag overhead; opposing flags my not be hidden, obscured or detained in any way nor used in an agressive manner. (2 Flags on either end of a pole will reduce such occurrences!).
  • Siege will be shelling the harbor attempting to sink any vessel they determine they wish to scuttle!

Missile Day - Siege Castle Battle
A tradition several years in the making now. CA's are divided in roughly 2 even units and proceed to shoot their opponents on the opposing "half" of the fort. A well armored troll occassionally guards the area and harrasses the CA's seeking better advantage. Simultaneous shelling of the fort will be occuring by our brethren in siege so beware lest ye lose your head.

Youth Combat Castle Battle
Each year the Youth Combat programs of the East and Middle, with friends and allies, offer a castle battle and melee. Afterward we will celebrate those youth who have fought their last Pennsic in the YC program (as they 'graduate' or age-out).

Challenge of the Seneschal of Hainault
The Seneschal of Hainault and certain companions have come to do single combats against the Company of St. Michael. Those who wish may also offer challenges against one side or the other, either for an agreed number of blows or until one champion or the other falls to the ground. Also, there will be group combats with rebated weapons as often and as long as the ladies wish.

Æthelmearc Youth/Adult Tag Team Tourney
Everyone must enter as a team: 1 authorized youth fighter and 1 authorized adult fighter. Kids fight kids, adults fight adults, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Battle of Hastings - Chainmail Battle
The year 1066 is a turning point in history. Choose a side - defend the Saxons, or join attacking Norman forces - and use your strength of arms to help decide the day. This is a special rules melee. We've attempted to make this event a time for fighters to showcase their beautiful mid-period kits in an atmosphere recreating the feel of battles in the 11th century.
Rules:
  1. A combatant may count the first strike they receive against mail as light.
  2. In general, any form of armor that is documentable to the Battle of Hastings is acceptable.
  3. General rules: no exposed plastic (plastic gauntlets OK), no exposed duct tape, no exposed modern sports gear, no exposed modern logos, no blatantly modern footwear.
  4. Helms: spangen or conical construction preferred. No closed faced helms of any type, and no blatantly 12th century+ helms.
  5. Torso: anything documentable to the period. Mail has an advantage, but a padded or even plain tunic is documentable as well.
  6. Limb armor: greaves and vambraces may be exposed, all other limb armor should be hidden (exceptions may be made here for the first year of this event).
  7. Gauntlets: any are acceptable (even plastic); this is a safety factor which supersedes historical practice.
  8. Shields: round or kite. No later period designs (heater, etc.).
  9. Weapons: Primary weapons should be spear, axe, great axe, sword, seax. Thrown weapons OK. Combat archery OK. No weapons that are undocumentable to the place and time.
  10. Force commanders require one extra mortal wound to kill.
Victory Conditions: Best two of three battles. Victory is achieved either by destroying the enemy force, or by killing the enemy leader (routing the force he commands). Participants are asked to bring some small token as "loot"; the side losing two of three battles will give someone on the other side their "loot" token. This should not be an expensive item, but rather a token of victory on the field that day appropriate to your station.
Please stop by the Armor Archive (http://www.armourarchive.org/) for more information or discussion of the event, to declare for a side, or to ask any specific questions about armor requirements. This is a chance for students of the period to explore in more depth the history of this important battle, and have fun re-creating the field - by deciding the outcome for themselves!
