Rapier Activity Descriptions

Tuesday, July 29

Étude for Single Sword
Time: 10 - 11 am
Class - for beginner and intermediate fencers and those who teach them. These drills will focus on form, balance, movement and coordination.

Étude 1 (first week) is more linear;

Étude 2 (second week) adds off line/lateral movement. Emphasis will be on learning the études for home drill, as well as taking elements out of the drill for more focused work in groups.

Early Bird Tourney
Time: 10 am - noon.
Pick fights, take names and get acquainted. The purpose of this tourney isn't to win the most bouts, but to find the most interesting facts about your opponents. **"More talk! Less fighting!"** Who will the MICs give the bird to this year?

Bouquet List
1 - 2:30 pm
Entrants must be fighting for a consort, either present (preferred) or not. Each entrant is given a single flower, after your second defeat you surrender it to the victor. At the end, the winner has a bouquet to present to his or her consort. Also, a pouch will be presented to the most chivalric as voted by the consorts.


Saturday, August 2

Fundamentals of Giganti
Time: 9 - 11 pm.
Nicoletto Giganti, in his two books, lays out a highly efficient system for success in the personal duel. We'll discuss and practice his application of measure, tempo, and line to improve your fight. Bring your sword, gorget, and mask.

The Battle of La Rochelle
Time: 9 - 11 am. Location: Fort.
The defenders of La Rochelle **will** die! The only question is, **when**? Join us at the Fort to find out. Heavy rapier and rubber band gun melée. Attackers will have unlimited resurrections, defenders will have limited resurrections. RBG cannon are welcome. No archery please. Pennsic standard rules for rapier apply. Don't have a heavy rapier? Bring a dagger or two. Bring a friend or 20. The more the merrier. Don't like to fight melée? Come and get close to the action and help marshal the battle. Please muster **at the Fort** half an hour before the start time, especially if you want to fight along with a particular group. Time permitting, we will let the holders of all the assembled kingdoms' and principalities' highest award for rapier, and kingdom and principality rapier champions see how long they can hold out against the Known World! Always a fan favorite.

A Matter of Honor Tournament
Time: 1 - 3 pm
Show your skills as a duelist. Defeat your opponent in an honorable fight without killing them. This tournament will randomly pair fencers. Each pairing will fight until one of the contestants loses use of their primary weapon hand/arm. Each of the fencer's wounds are reported at the end of the bout. When fencers have accumulated 10 wounds, they must retire from the tournament. If you kill your opponent, any wounds you inflicted on the 'deceased' during that bout are not counted, but the 'victor' is marked with 3 wounds. Notes: This is NOT a wounds-retained tournament. Two-handed weapons are not for dueling.


Sunday August 3

Pennsic Ladies' Championship Tourney
Time: 11:30 - 1:30 pm
The Pennsic Ladies' Championship Tournament is the qualifying tournament for the Known World Ladies' Championship to be held later in the week. The winner will be the Pennsic Ladies Champion, but the top 8 will be allowed to compete in the Known World Ladies' Championship held later in the week. The format is round-robin with the top 8 dueling it out in a single elimination format. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third.

Poker Card Tourney
Time: 11:30 - 1:30 pm
This is a bear pit-style format where the loser of the bout stays to fight the next fencer. Fencers stay until they win or have 3 deaths. Double kills count towards the number of deaths. Fencers leaving the field shall receive a playing card and shall keep up to 7 cards. The winner of the Tournament shall be determined by the best poker hand of 5 cards. This format will be run twice to determine 2 winners.

War Point - Rapier Champions
Time: 2:30 - 5 pm.
1 Melee (10 principal and 10 allies), 1 Queen's Champion bout, 1 King's Champion bout, 1 Cut & Thrust bout, 21 Bouts (11 principal/10 allied) paired in advance. Dead is dead - double kills are not refought. A tie is possible and results in no points


Monday August 4

By the Book Tourney
Time: 9 - 11 am
A historical fencing tourney; memorize your Marozzo, review your Ridolfo and study your Saviolo, for the third annual tournament where book worms can be winners! Period fencing forms and period dress as seen in the manuals will bring you success. As always, lavish prizes will be bestowed upon the competitor with the most wins, the best dressed, and the one who best adheres to the style of a given master.

SCA Rapier Combat for Historic Martial Artists
Time: 9 - 12 pm
This is a place and time for SCA fencers who are interested in, or are actively pursuing, the study of historic martial arts in the context of SCA rapier rules. During this time, you can meet others with similar interests, offer to teach, look to learn, or just come out to spar with the like-minded.

A daily sign-up sheet will allow those in attendance to connect with others with matched goals for the day (e.g. someone willing to teach Fabris can find students wanting to learn, or vice versa, or someone looking for a fight can get one), and each day will end with special HMA-related sparring challenges.

Thugs for Jugs
Time: 11 - 1 pm.
To all those skilled in the art of rapier, the Free Scholars of the *Academie de Espée* of the great Kingdom of Atlantia are pleased to once again host an annual tournament to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The format of this 9th annual tourney will be triple elimination, with progressive weapons forms following Atlantian rapier conventions. Combatants start first with Single Sword. Upon taking a loss, the combatant may take up a defensive secondary. Upon taking a second loss, the combatant may take up an offensive secondary. Upon taking a third and final loss, the combatant will take heed on the need to learn to parry, and watch their fellow combatants strive to bring glory and awareness towards a most noble and important cause. A donation of at least $5 will be required to compete, though all are welcome to support this important cause.

The winner and finalist will be awarded a period drinking vessel worthy of their great feat of strength. All funds raised will be donated to a breast cancer charity of the winner's choice.

War Point - Rapier Field Battles
Time: 2 - 4 pm.
Consists of 3 battles with 15 minutes between; one Friendship Battle 20 minutes after War Point battles.

Everything Looks Rosier from the Bottom of a Glass
Time: 4 - 6 pm.
To enter this tourney bring a bottle of your favorite libation as an entrance fee. The winner of this tournament will get to choose their favorite libation from all the entries. However, any visiting or participating Royalty may wish to sample from the entries, as Their Royal Whim suits them. This is a simple double-elimination random pairing tourney. No two-handed swords are allowed. Double kills count as a loss for both parties. MICs: Don Caine Ramsey and Warder Colin Macnish.
To enter you must meet the following criteria:
1) Be 21, with a valid picture ID available for review. NO exceptions to this rule
2) Have at least 1 bottle of your favorite libation (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) as your entrance fee.
We encourage all participants to stick around for the post-tourney revel. Bring food, brings chairs…AND bring your cups.

Ansteorran Rapier Tourney
Time: 9 - 12 pm.
Her Majesty Ansteorra does invite duelists across the Knowne World to join Her on the fields of Pennsic for a grand tourney. Come show your prowess, your valor, and your heart. There will be fighting enough for all. Her Majesty reserves the right to alter the tourney format to give the most fun for all those who enter, which will be fought under Ansteorran Conventions. There will be a sumptuous repast for all those entering. Join your comrades, your brothers and sisters in arms....for glory and fame!

SCA Rapier Combat for Historic Martial Artists

Cadet Tourney
Time: 11:30 - 1:30 pm.
Come join rapier combatants from across the Known World in the second annual Cadet Tournament. This tournament will be open to those who are sponsored by a person who has a kingdom’s highest award for rapier. This includes the Order of the White Scarf, Order of the Bronze Ring, Order of the Golden Rapier, The Dragon's Steel, The Order of Thorbjorn's Hammer, The Order of the Queen's Blade, and The Meridian Order of the Blade or equivalent award. A person may sponsor more than one entrant. Sponsors will be required to sign in their cadet, or send a letter of entrance. If you need a sponsor, we will find one for you. This will be a traditional double elimination tournament. Each bout shall be fought to a single kill. Double kills will be re-fought one time. On the second double kill, "Dead is dead!" The finals will be fought best two out of three. All bouts shall be fought with default Pennsic rules.

Youth Rapier Melee Castle Battle
Time: 12:00 - 1:00 pm.

Wednesday August 6

SCA Rapier Combat for Historic Martial Artists

Atlantian 5-Man Melee Tournament
Time: 9 - 1 pm.
An annual tradition. Bring your best 5-man fencing team and compete against the Known World. No more than two martial high orders per team.

Known World Baronial Rapier Challenge
Time: 12:30 - 2:30 pm.
A tournament displaying the finest displays of chivalry, pageantry and knowledge between baronial champions, for the entertainment of Their Excellencies and the gallery. Participants must be the current rapier champion of their Barony.

Æthelmearc Novice Tournament
Time: 12:30 - 2:30 pm.
This tournament is open to any authorized rapier combatant with less than three years from their first rapier authorization, who has never received an award at the Kingdom level for rapier prowess and who has never won a rapier tourney at a published SCA event. The tourney will be run as a multiple-bearpits tourney (Both Light and Heavy Rapier will be permitted.) Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Light and Heavy lists.

C&T Tourney
Time: 2 - 4 pm.
Swash your buckler and swing your side sword, it's time for the Pennsic Cut-and-Thrust tournament. Competitors must be qualified in Cut-and-Thrust in their home kingdom. All secondary forms permitted.

Don Edmund the Lame Memorial Two-Handed Tourney
Time: 4 - 5:30 pm.
We invite everyone to join us to celebrate our beloved friend, Don Edmund The Lame. The tourney is dedicated to the form Edmund so dearly loved - the two-handed sword. The tourney format is a simple one. It is single elimination, random pairing tourney. Double kills count as a loss for both parties. Standard Pennsic two-handed conventions are in effect, and can be found in the Pennsic Rapier Rulebook. Tournament MIC: Don Caine Ramsey and Don Nathaniel Wyatt.

After the tourney, there will be a small service to honor our fallen friend.


Thursday August 7

Known World Ladies' Championship Tourney
Time: 9 - 11 am
The top Ladies in the Known World will battle it out for the Known World Championship. To qualify, you must finish in the top group in each of the previous qualifiers. The good news is there is a qualifying tournament at Pennsic. See the schedule for details. The tournament will be round-robin with the top four fighting a single elimination playoff to determine the champion.

Blood of Heroes Tourney
Time: 10:30 - 1:30 pm.
If you like the rapier 5-on-5 at Pennsic, you'll love Blood of Heroes. In this round-robin tourney, you will try to score on your opponent by moving the dog skull and placing it on your opponent's goal. It is fast-paced and a lot of fun. It is the best spectator sport rapier has ever seen. There are no White Scarf/OGR/etc. restrictions on teams, so get your team together and learn how to play BoH. You'll love it.

War Point - Rapier Broken Field Battle

Throwback Thursday Épée/Foil Tourney
Time: 3 - 4 pm.
Remember when? Come and celebrate Throwback Thursday with a foil/épée tournament. Round-robin will seed single-elimination final bracket.


Friday August 8

The GreyBeard Tourney
Time: 10 - 12 pm.
Either a round robin or double elimination tournament, depending on the number of entrants. Entrants must be 50 years old or older in the calendar year of 2014. Æthelmearc rapier rules apply.
